Bea Elizabeth Dalton Phillips
The Myth
Bea Elizabeth Dalton was the daughter of James Lewis Dalton and Adeline Lee Younger and a sister to the infamous late 19th century Dalton gang who terrorized Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
Source of the Myth
The descendants of Tom Phillips and his wife Bea Elizabeth have somehow adopted the Dalton family as Bea Elizabeth's parents and relatives. The evidence record shows that not all the family held that belief but it appears to now be accepted by most of the current generation.
Straightening the Record
There are many explanations put forth by the family attempting to explain the dearth of information about Bea Elizabeth Phillips. One family member has forged documents and has had multiple tombstones replaced with his grandmother's name inscribed on them as a daughter or a relative.
Fact 1: Documentation and inference. Bea Elizabeth, with any last name, does not appear on 1860, 1870 or 1880 censuses. The family says she was born 1856 and died 1894, so one would think she would appear on at least one of them. The Phillips family says she left home and traveled some 300-400 miles into Indian Territory and then to Texas before the 1870 census, meaning she left home before she was 13 years old. No other evidence supports this theory.
Fact 2: Documentation. The Dalton children were all born in Missouri with the exception of one born in Kansas. The Dalton family never visited Texas, where Bea Phillips was born.
Fact 3: Documentation. The censuses for Bea Elizabeth Phillips' children consistently give her birth place as Texas. Her husband was from Kerr County, Texas and was there through at least 1890. They were both there between 1882 and 1890 as that is where their children were born.
Fact 4: Documentation. Her surname may have been Dalton, Dawlton, Harris or Harrison based on death certificates and social security applications of her children.
What do the facts tell us about the myth?
No record or document supports Bea Elizabeth Phillips' parents being James Lewis Dalton and Adeline Lee Younger.
The Dalton children were born in Missouri or Kansas. The following indicate that Bea Elizabeth Phillips was born in Texas, showing that she is unlikely to be their child:
- 1900 Indian Territory census of the widowed Tom Phillips. The birth place for the mother of each of his five children is listed as Texas.
- 1910 Oklahoma census. Her son Lee gives the birth place of his mother as Texas.
- 1920 Oklahoma census. Two of her sons give the birth place of their mother as Texas.
- 1930 Oklahoma census. Three of her sons give the birth place of their mother as Texas.
- The 1931 death certificate for son Lee says his mother was born in Texas.
The following provide evidence for her surname:
- The death certificate for son Lee gives her surname as Dalton. Informant was his wife.
- The social security application for son Jack gives her surname as Dawlton.
- Jack's funeral record and death certificate give her surname as Harrison. Informant was his wife.
- The social security application for son John gives her surname as Harris.
- California death index and death certificate of son John give her surname as Harrison. Informant is not listed.
All known records and documentation indicate Bea Elizabeth Phillips was born in Texas and lived there through 1890. Her grave is in Elmore City, Oklahoma, so it appears she moved there with the family. No untainted source record or documentation exists for her being anywhere else.
Sources listing the children of James Lewis Dalton and Adeline Lee Younger.
(None of them show anyone named Bea or Elizabeth or Phillips.)
- 1870 census, Cass County, Missouri
- 1880 census, Bates County, Missouri
- 1890 territorial census, Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory
- 1900 territorial census, Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory
- The interview of Bill Dalton's wife in the Saturday, June 9, 1894, edition of the Ardmore Oklahoma Daily Ardmoreite, in which she lists his siblings. This was in 1894, six months before Bea Elizabeth Phillips died. Bill Dalton was killed less than thirty miles from where she lived yet there is no mention of the alleged sister-in-law.
- Emmett Dalton's 1918 book "Beyond the Law". (It lists a deceased sister named Lelia who isn't documented anywhere else. It appears the Phillips rendition incorporated that name and added it to Bea Elizabeth's name as more proof but it is not found in any early documents about her.)
- Dalton family obituaries.
Known sources of erroneous information supporting the myth.
- "Ancestral File," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:1:93CS-9R9) (There are hundreds, maybe thousands of genealogies at familysearch showing this false genealogy.)
- Family Trees at ancestry.com (Depending on the search term used, one can find between 65,000 and 1.4 million trees for her.)
- Yates Publishing. U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900: Bea Elizabeth Dalton
- Tombstones in Kingfisher Cemetery, Oklahoma for Adeline Dalton, Emmett Dalton, Leona Dalton and Simon Dalton. (They were "replaced" with stones bearing the name of Elizabeth as a daughter and sister.)
- Tombstones in Elmore City Cemetery and Tussy Cemetery, Oklahoma for Tom and Elizabeth Phillips. (Tom and Elizabeth Phillips are buried in Tussy Cemetery. Their stone was "replaced" with one bearing the name of Elizabeth as a daughter of James and Adeline Dalton and a second stone for them, with similar markings, was placed in the Elmore City Cemetery.)
Evidence supplied by Bea Elizabeth Phillips' descendants.
- A family oral history which explains away the evidence disputing their version of history; e.g. saying she left home before the census to explain why she is never recorded with the Daltons, that she married an unknown man named HARRISON to explain the surname listed on her son's death certificates, etc.
- A Bible page indicating she was born in Missouri and her parents were James Lewis Dalton and Adeline Lee Younger. (This is suspect for several reasons, one being that it appears some entries were made in ball point ink which did not become available until after WW-II and another being that two different "originals" were shown to two different researchers.)
- A "Delayed Filing" death certificate for Bea Elizabeth Phillips showing her birth place as Missouri and her parents as James Lewis Dalton and Adeline Lee Younger. (The informant is a grandson who wasn't born until 35 years after she died; it lists the funeral director as E.H. Yeary, but he didn't go into the funeral business until 10 years after she died; it has the attending physician's signature yet he died 56 years before the certificate was created and did not live in the area at the time of her death.)
- An altered death certificate for son John showing his mother's name as Dalton and her birthplace as Missouri. (The unaltered original says her surname was Harrison and her birthplace is unknown.)
- An altered death certificate for son Jack showing his mother's name as Elizabeth Dalton. (The unaltered original says her name was Elizabeth Harrison.)
- An altered interview of Jane Blivens Dalton (Bill Dalton's widow) adding a sister named Elizabeth Phillips.
- An altered obituary of Adeline Dalton adding Elizabeth Phillips as a daughter predeceasing her.
- A "Memorial Obituary" for Leona Dalton written by B. Elizabeth Phillips' grandson Bill Phillips and listing his father, Jack Phillips, as a nephew. The original obituary, published in the Kingfisher Free Press, April 20, 1964, has no such name.)
- An obituary for Lee "Slim" Phillips giving a detailed genealogy tracing his ancestry back through Bea Elizabeth Dalton Phillips to James and Adeline Dalton. This was published in the hometown paper of the person responsible for replacing the gravestones and altering the documents listed here. (An obituary published in Lee's home town paper has no such genealogy.)
- An obituary for grandson Loyce Phillips sent to the Dalton Genealogical Society Journal giving one grandson's name as Bill Dalton Phillips when that is not his real name and giving a genealogy back through Bea Elizabeth "Leila" Dalton Phillips and James Lewis and Adaline Lee Younger Dalton. (Lelia is a daughter listed in Emmett Dalton's book. The obituary misspells her name and adds it to Bea Elizabeth Phillips' name.)
- Numerous letters from and an interview with one of her grandsons.
