Simon Wiess was in Santo Domingo on August 17 1828, where he participated with the Masonic fraternity. Santo Domingo became the Dominican Republic in 1844. It is located on the Eastern side of the island of Hispaniola, which was discovered by Columbus in 1492 and became the base for the Spanish conquest of the Caribbean. The nation of Haiti is on the Western side of the island and its Western neighbor is the island nation of Cuba.
