Elba is an island between the Eastern coast of Tuscany, Italy and the island of Corsica. Elba probably held a particular attraction for Simon for that is where Napoleon was first exiled in 1814. Simon, at the age of 15, left for his travels the following year, but Napoleon had already escaped exile and had returned to France for his Hundred Days War, which he lost at Waterloo. He was again forced into exile, but this time he was imprisoned at the remote South Atlantic island of St. Helena. There is no evidence Simon ever visited Elba, but it was within the perimeter of his travels and a distinct possibility exists that he did.
