George W. Lynch was incarcerated in the Colorado Territorial Prison June 19, 1881 to begin his life sentence for the murder of Charles Lyles. He was pardoned two years later, April 24, 1893, by Governor Waite, the pardon being signed by Lt. Governor David Nichols. The penitentiary was located in Canon City and was opened in 1871.

Pardon
Whereas:
One George Lynch now and since June 18, 1881, confined in the Colorado State Penitentiary, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of manslaughter by the Hon. J. D. Ward District Judge sitting in and for the County of Lake, State of Colorado, and
Whereas:
Letters are on file in this office from the Commissioners of the Penitentiary, the Warden of the Penitentiary in 1891 and from the Hon. A. R. Kennedy, Hon J. E. Reynolds, Hon Artemus Walters, Hon Thomas Thornton, Hon Wm Sullivan and the Hon Robert Eaton all members of the Penitentiary Committee of the 8th General Assembly, recommending the pardon of the said George Lynch, and
Whereas:
From the said letters it appears that the aforesaid crime was not commited with malicious intent and that there were strongly mitigating circumstances connected with the case, and
Whereas:
In July 1883 he was affected mentally and was removed to the Insane Asylum at Pueblo. While there he acted as coachman to the Institution and held the trust and confidence of the officers. On February 5th 1884 he was discharged from the Asylum as cured. He returned to the Penitentiary without a guard or other surveillance, and presented himself to the officer of the Penitentiary and has since been confined therein.
Now Therefore:
I D. H. Nichols acting Governor of the State of Colorado believing the foregoing and other meritorious conduct worthy of reward, by virtue of the power vested in me law do hereby grant unto the said George Lynch, a Full and Unconditional Pardon, and the Warden of the Penitentiary upon receipt and by authority of these Presents shall forthwith release and set him free.
