SPRINGFIELD CASE.

The case of the state against Dick Springfield charged with the murder of Steve Allchin at Hempstead, was taken up in regular order by the criminal court this morning.  Attorneys for the defendant consumed the forenoon in preparing an application for a change of venu, on the ground that public sentiment here was so prejudiced against defendant that he could not get a fair trial.  They supported their application with affidavits.  The attorneys for the state fought this movement and asked time to get up counter affidavits.  Pending this preparation court adjourned for dinner.  In the afternoon eight or ten witnesses were put upon the stand and testified as to the chances to get a fair trial in this county.  The attorneys on both sides were very searching in their interrogations.  About 6:30 o'clock court adjourned.  Judge Cleveland will announce his decision in the morning.

The prisoner, Springfield, looked pale and somewhat thinner in flesh than when he was last seen in this court.  He had a good many friends in the court-room.
