The assassination of Lewis McDade, colored, at Hempstead, who happened to be candidate for cotton weigher, ought to be denounced all over the state. So far as known no offense was publicly charged against Lewis, who, as stated in our special, was a peaceable republican negro, and had the same right to the protection of the law and to run for office that his white friends had. That this fresh assassination in Waller county should occur at this particular juncture is doubly to be regretted. It does appear that the curse of murder cannot be lifted from Hampstead, a town which, like Waller county, contains some of the best, most honorable, citizens in Texas. Let the murderers of Lewis McDade be hunted down and punished. The negro, equally with other citizens, when not offending our laws must be protected by them.
