Secretary — Military Company Disbanded.
( ... snip ... )
The local military company, the Johnston Guards, have disbanded, and their arms were shipped to the adjutant-general at Austin yesterday. The boys stated that they saw no fun, money or glory in playing soldier, and as the ranks required a few privates and all could not be officers, they concluded that the "pomp and circumstance of glorious war" would not enable them to "seek the bubble reputation at the cannon's mouth," and therefore "stacked arms" and "broke ranks" for a "rest."
