Further Particulars of the Killing of Napoleon B. Farr by James Carroll.
Special to the Gazette.
HEMPSTEAD, Tex., May 5 — Napoleon B. Farr was killed at Waller, in this county, at about 11:30 a.m. yesterday by James Corroll. (sic) It seems that there had been some previous difficulty or misunderstanding about horses. Mr. Carroll was in Hempstead yesterday morning attending to some business, and left town for home, near Waller, about 10 o'clock. On reaching Waller he got out of his buggy and went into the postoffice to get his mail. He received a letter and had Mr. Sanders read it for him. After reading it he (Carroll) and Nap Farr had a few words. Nap knocked him down twice with his fist. Carroll then attempted to draw his pistol and Farr ran. Carroll shot at him once before he got out at the door. Then following Farr to the door he shot at Farr who was running off hitting him in the neck, breaking it and killing him almost instantly.
Carroll then got into his buggy and went home. Word reached Hempstead about 2 o'clock. Sheriff McDade and deputies, County Attorney Lipscomb and Justice of the Peace Duer went down immediately. Sheriff McDade and deputies went to Carroll's home and arrested him and brought him to Hempstead. Justice Duer held the inquest and returned home. The examining trial will be held on Monday next.
A great many of our pleasure-loving citizens are in Brenham to-day attending the "Mai Fext" and fine stock show.
