A Stranger Murdered and Thrown Into a Pond.

[Special to the News.]

Hempstead, March 26, 1878.

The body of a white man, aged about 35 or 40 years, was found in a pond about five miles from here, where it had been dragged and thrown in after being murdered by some person unknown.  The body was draped in dark jeans pants and undershirt; bald on the top of the head; light auburn hair, cut short; light mustache and imperial.  He was seen in the company with a copper-colored negro man, aged about 35 years, a few days previous.  The camp where the two had stopped was hard by.  Traces of a struggle and considerable blood were found; also a club with which the morder was committed.  The murderer passed through this place on foot, walking the railroad track, carrying a new valise about three or four days ago.  The name of the unfortunate man could not be ascertained.  Efforts are being made to trace up the murderer.
