Yellow Fever in Hempstead.
—
The first case of fever in Hempstead occurred on the 16th of August. It was brought here by Mr. M. P. Voorhees, from Galveston, who had run away from there hoping to escape, but was attacked on the cars, while on his way, and had to stop here to receive medical treatment. From him the fever rapidly spread among our inhabitants, carrying off many of our oldest and best citizens. From that time forward all who could, left the city, leaving the place nearly depopulated, until, on the 10th of August, when it was clearly demonstrated that the dread Destroyer was really in our midst, and taking from us the ones we loved dearest and best, there were but about two hundred of our citizens left in town, all the rest having fled from the fever. The pestilence, as appears from the following list, reached its height on September 18th, when seven persons died, that being the largest number in one day. The last case of yellow fever in Hempstead occurred on or about the 11th of November. Since that time our city has been remarkable healthy. Our list is furnished by Mr. T. G. Patrick, our efficient and worthy Post-Master, who, during the whole epidemic, remained at his post. His list is very nearly accurate. Some few persons did not die of yellow fever, but from other diseases.
