- More meaningful as number of markers tested increases.
- Close match & same surname = high probability of relationship.
- Does not guarantee useful relationship (especially for R1b haplogroup).
- Common surname greatly increases odds of relationship.
- Requires traditional genealogy research to confirm.
- DNA can't give the name of an ancestor.
- Watch for similar places and times for the families.
- Collateral lines and family friends can be clues.
- Triangulation improves usefulness.
- Requires tests of nth-removed cousins.
- Provides evidence where a mutation occurred.
- Provides evidence of ancestor's haplotype.
