HEMPSTEAD, July 9. — James Carroll was shot and instantly killed at noon to-day by Joe Driscoll, near Waller station, ten miles south of here on the Central road. Carroll killed N. B. Farr on the 4th of May last, at this station. Driscoll was in Farr's employ at the time and was the main witness against Carroll. The men had bitter words some times on the subject, and it is said Carroll made serious threats. To-day the men, with a companion, were on the way to work on a public road, when Driscoll, walking behind, fired two shots in the back of Carroll, killing him instantly. He then stole a neighbor's horse and saddle and escaped, going eastward. Driscoll was a sailor and had no relatives in this section. He is an Englishman.
