WALLER COUNTY.
The election in Hempstead passed off very quietly, not a single blow being struck on account of political applications or prejudice. In fact both black and white citizens seemed to be on their good behavior. For the first time in the history of the county large numbers of freedmen scratched off Republicans and substituted good Democrats for county officers. The following was the Hempstead vote for the principal county officers: County Judge — W. S. Wright 239, E. Waller 210, J. M. Goggin 105. District Clerk — W. F. Harper 677, R. P. faddis 421. County Attorney — R. R. Booth 361, J. W. Stephenson 221. For Sheriff — T. S. McDade 417, Mat. Weir 195, M. F. Whatley 162. There were other candidates for all these offices, but their votes were comparatively small.
