    William H. Cloud, farmer, was born near Bellefonte, Ala., October 28, 1826, the son of Benjamin and Nancy (Netherland) Cloud, the former born in 1788, in Sullivan County, the son of Jeremiah Cloud, a North Carolinian and pioneer of East Tennessee. The father was a farmer familiar with the early Indian troubles, and died in 1854. The mother was born in Virginia in 1797, the daughter of Richard Netherland; she had eight sons and four daughters. Our subject, the sixth son, received the usual country advantages, and spent fifteen years in California at mining. Since then he has been at his present home, farming with good results his fine estate of 365 acres in the Twelfth District.

    Obituary:
    BEN R. CLOUD
    Ben R. Cloud, 61, resident of the Old Kingsport section his entire life and one of the most widely known pioneers of this vicinity, died unexpectedly late yesterday afternoon of a heart attack.
    Mr. Cloud had been active all his life and visited among friends in town yesterday.
    He was a member of the Old Kingsport Presbyterian church and a veteran of the Spanish-American war, having served throughout the conflict as a member of Company K.  He was born across Holston river on property now known as the old Roller estate.
    Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2?30 p.m. at Old Kingsport Presbyterian church with the Reverend W.H. McCorkle and the Reverend Hugh Ash, pastor of the church, officiating.  Interment will be in Cloud's cemetery.
    Mr. Cloud is survived by his widow, Nanie Ross Cloud, two sons, Sam and George, three daughters, Mrs. Walter Baumgardner, Misses Margaret and Jane Cloud, and one brother, Frank L. Cloud, all of Kingsport.

    John Robert Churchwell, 68, died Sunday afternoon following a hert attack at his home in Clouds Bend.  A farmer by occupation, he had lived most of his life in the community.
    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mollie Churchwell; one son, Robert, and one daughter, Mrs. Sally Parker, all of Clouds Bend' two sisters, Mrs. Henry Cleek, Church Hill, and Mrs. Mollie Ratliff, Fordtown, and one brother, Witt Churchwell, Clouds Bend.

    GRAHAM - Jess W. Cloud Sr., 79, a retired rancher, died Sunday afternoon in a Fort Worth hospital. Services were to be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Morrison Funeral Home Chapel.
    The Rev. Don Hamer of Atlanta, GA., was to officiate. Burial was to be in Murray Cemetery.
    Born April 23, 1897, in Murray, Mr. Cloud was a lifetime resident of the town. He married Anna Rose McGuire Sept. 28, 1940, in Olney.

    Friend of local river dies

    A woman who became widely known for her efforts to clean up and curb rowdy behavior on the Guadalupe River died Friday.
    Fonda Wetsel passed away after a long illness. She was 69.
    Wetsel, who had a nursing degree from Baylor University, spent most of her life in Dallas, where she was an active volunteer in her church.
    In New Braunfels, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a volunteer for the Republican Women.
    She was an avid gardener who supported Habitat for Humanity and the local animal shelter.
    Wetsel is survived by her husband William Wetsel, of New Braunfels; son Eddy Wetsel Jr. and his wife Jobie, of New Braunfels; daughters, Dianne Wetsel, of New Braunfels, and Cynthia Mather and her husband H.L., of Columbus, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
    Wetsel moved to a beautiful home on the Guadalupe River from the Dallas area eight years ago. She didn't like the more lewd and rowdy aspects of the tubing scene and the mess tubers made of the river and her yard, and she began a long fight to clean up the Guadalupe.
    That battle made her a local celebrity and led to the effort undertaken by Comal County in 1998 to increase policing of the river and what happens on it -- and to clean it up.
    "I think keeping the river clean and in its natural state was always her biggest concern," said her son, Eddy Wetsel. "She wanted it to be beautiful and remain in its natural state for future generations."
    Comal County Judge Danny Scheel said Friday he was saddened at the news of Wetsel's death.
    "I am certainly sorry to hear of her passing. I knew she'd been in ill health for some time. Fonda was a good friend who kept in close touch advising me about the river," Scheel said.
    The judge said he spent many summer holiday weekends at Wetsel's home, learning about the situation on the river.
    "Fonda will be very much missed. We respect her opinions, and hopefully she's proud of the work we've done to clean up behavior on the river. She was the reason Carter Casteel and I started all the meetings up and down the river," to ascertain the steps that would be necessary to clean it up, Scheel said.
    In conjunction with the Comal County Water-Oriented Recreation District, Sheriff Bob Holder threw added resources at the river on summer and holiday weekends to curb behavior. About 40 or more deputies and public safety officials patrol the approximately-10 miles of the river on busy weekends.
    A few of them ? a few lucky ones ? would be stationed at the riverfront in Wetsel's backyard, where she put out chairs for them and fed them.
    Friday in the sheriff's office, deputies spoke of Wetsel as though they'd lost a friend.
    Chief David Ott, supervisor of the Comal County Jail, is the CCSO's former patrol captain who was responsible for implementing the 40 page, WORD/sheriffs river management plan.
    Ott said sheriff's deputies never took sides in the river debates ? they just did the work handed down to them. Like Scheel, Ott said Wetsel would be missed.
    "Fonda was vocal and instrumental in drawing attention to the situation on the river," Ott said. "She was one of the great fighters for a cleaner river."
    Eddy Wetsel said Alaska was probably his mother's biggest passion. During her lifetime, she made more than 20 trips there, often with groups of kids, doing volunteer work at Alaska Pacific University. She made her last trip last summer. Her wish is to have her ashes spread on the tundra in Alaska.
    Wetsel said his family will do just that.

    Mrs. Sallie Stafford
    Mrs. Sallie Netherland Stafford, Church Hill Route 5, died at Holston Valley Community Hospital at 2 p.m. Friday.  She had been ill for several months.
    She had worked for the Clinchfield Railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1967.  She had lived all her life in Hawkins County, and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
    Survivors include her husband, W.R. Stafford, a step-son, Eugene Stafford of New York; Mrs. Lochiel Rogers and Mrs. Velma Estes, both of Church Hill: and 4 step-grandchildren.

    The whereabouts of a 16-year-old Dobyns-Bennett high school student today remained a mystery as relatives of Woody Cloud said they had had no word from the youth missing since Monday.
    His parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Cloud, Old Kingsport residents, reporting the boy's disappearance to police headquarters, said he was last seen Monday morning presumably on his way to school.
    The could give no reason for the boy's leaving.  However, they stated that they thought in all probability the boy was looking for a job and was now working.
    He was wearing light trousers, blue shirt and tan shoes when last seen.
    He was described as having light brown wavy hair, blue eyes, five feet and seven inches tall and weighting between 130 and 135 pounds.

    Wallace "Wally" Cloud
    May 15, 1923 - December 8, 2008
    Wallace "Wally" Cloud, 85, Unity passed away in his sleep, Monday December 8, 2008 in Madison at his daughter's home.
    Wally was born May 15, 1923 in Kingsport, Tennessee the son of Oscar and Margaret (Barker) Cloud. He attended school in Kingsport. Following his education, Wally joined the US Army and served during WWII. He was stationed in Europe and Iceland.
    On May 20, 1946 in Gate City, Virginia, Wally was united in marriage to the former Cly Ellen Miller. The couple recently celebrated 62 years of married life.
    Wally was employed at the Kingsport Press until moving to Wisconsin in 1963. He retired from Pathfinder Homes of Spencer in 1977.
    Wally loved animals, he always owned at least one dog. He held on to every car he owned. He also enjoyed gardening, especially his strawberry and blueberry patches. He video taped his family and children through the years.
    He is lovingly survived by his wife, Cly Ellen Cloud, Unity; a daughter, Glenna BurkCloud (Terry Burk), Madison; and one son, Randy (Dianne) Cloud, Unity; grandchildren, Tori and Anthony Cloud and Brian Burk as well as great grandchildren, Ethan and Bridget Cloud. One sister, Edith Cloud and a sister-in-law, Ruby Cloud both of Kingsport, TN further survive Wallace.
    A son, Teddy Cloud; one sister, Elinor Dunn; and a brother, Frank Cloud preceded Wally in death.
    Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday Dec. 11, at St John's Lutheran Church, Spencer. The Rev Rebekah Terras presided. Military honors followed the service. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Kingsport, Tennessee.

    Harold Cecil Cloud, known to friends as Hal, was born May 14, 1921,in Joplin, Missouri, to Elbert Ernest Cloud and Winnie Wicks Cloud. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW-II and had an engineering career in the aerospace industry in Los Angeles.
    He was predeceased by his parents, brother Everett Orville Cloud, and wives Martha Ann Prendergast Cloud and Margaret Mary (Sharkey) Paterson Cloud.
    He is survived by sons Robert Frederick Winslow Cloud (wife: Cecilia) and Jay Scott Patrick Cloud (wife: Jill), daughter Cynthia Jane Cloud, and granddaughter Juliana Nicole Cloud.
    He was an active member of the Episcopal Church. After retirement he worked as a volunteer guide to travelers coming through Los Angeles International Airport. Hal enjoyed boating in the Pacific Ocean and genealogical research that traced his Cloud ancestors back to England in 1502. He was an active member of the Cloud Family Association, serving on its Board for many years and serving as Editor of the Cloud Family Journal for six years (2009 through 2015 -- eighteen fine issues).
    He passed away peacefully September 3, 2018, in his home in Playa del Ray, California, with loved ones at his side. His memorial service was at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, CA, at 11 am September 27, 2018. He was cremated and interred with his wife,Margaret M Cloud. "Together Forever!" said his son Scott.

Following graduation form college, Mrs. Edwards worked for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and later the Junior Chamber of Commerce. During World War II, she was a draftsman for Humble Oil Co. in Tyler. She was president of National TWU Alumnae Association 1050-52 and continued working on projects for the university.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Code E. Edwards, in 1974.

    BIG STONE GAP, Va. ? Elmer Ray Cloud, 73, passed away on Saturday (Jan. 5, 2008) at his home.
    He was a lifelong resident of Wise County and of Protestant faith. He was a former employee of Holston Defense in Kingsport, Tenn. and was an avid farmer. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.
    Elmer loved his family very much.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucian Frank Cloud and Bertie Thompson Cloud.
    Surviving are two brothers, Frank Cloud (Mary) of Big Stone Gap and Joe Cloud (Jenetta) of Surgoinsville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
    Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Bert L. Cloud and his wife, the Rev. Regina Anderson-Cloud officiating.
    Interment will follow in Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap.

    Bobby Joe Cloud, age 79, of Surgoinsville, went to be with the Lord Friday, March 24, 2017, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
    He was a born again Christian, he was retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad and enjoyed tinkering with trains and tooling in his garden.
    Joe was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was proud of his family.
    He was preceded in death by his parents Lucian and Bertie Cloud, brother, Almer Cloud, first wife, Barbara Cloud and daughter Faye Rimer.
    Calling hours are from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday at the Johnson ? Arrowood Funeral Home and anytime at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ed Johnson and Rev. Ed Barnette officiating.
    Graveside services will be conducted 11 am Thursday at the Hawkins County Memorial Gardens with Johnathan Rimer, Josh Rimer, Daniel Rimer, Ethan Rimer and John Rimer serving as pallbearers. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

    Dorothy "Dottie" Curtis, 85 was born June 15, 1925 in Kingsport, TN and died April 3, 2011. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Atoka, TN and played the piano with her band, "Dottie and the Boys", for 55 years. Mrs. Curtis is survived by her five children, Franklin E. Woodward, Joan Marie Bartron, Teresa Ann Crook and Teresa's husband, Bill Crook, Joe Malcolm Curtis and Floyd Clifton Curtis; eight grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Charles Henry Curtis and grandson, Jeffrey Charles Brewer.
