- Obituary from the Arlington Journal - Thursday July 13 1905
"The remains of JR Waller were brought in from Durant, and carried out to Johnson Station for burial. Mr. Waller formerly lived out south of town and was well known and hightly respected. He leaves a wife and large family of children, 3 of whom viz., Ab, George, and Mrs. Sam Swafford, live here, and others at Durant I.T. (Indian Territory) Rev WJ Lee conducted the funeral services. "
Notes from Mamaw: written on back on envelope -" Wallers lived in Georgia. Grandpa Waller shot in leg in Civil War. Aunt Annie born in Cherokee. Moved in wagon to Indian Territory Oklahoma. Lived in dugout, then built a home."
John Robert Waller found in census of 1860 Rutherford County Tennessee living with his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Clemmons, his mother Catherine, and little sister. Having such a large real estate and personal value listed in this early census, leads me to believe that this comes from an inheritance. A marriage license was recorded for JB Waller to Mary E Clements in Rutherford County on Sept 15, 1859. Mary died May 13, 1867, presumably in Tennessee after John Robert returned home from the Civil War. The Federal Census of 1870 found John Robert living in Giles County, Tennessee with his two children, Robert Jr. and Sarah. Living close by was the Thomas Clark family. Mattie Clark would become his wife in 1872. The 1880 census found the Waller family living in San Saba County Texas. In 1900, he is found living in Tarrant County, Texas with his second wife of 28 years, Mattie M Clark, and a large family. His mother in law, Nellie Clark, also makes her home with them. In Mattie's pension application for Confederate Widows, she states that she married John in Giles County Tennesse on January 3, 1875. In the Giles County marriage book II , the correct date of 3 January, 1872 is found.
In 1916, his brother, Sam, provided details on John's service during the Civil War, in order for Mattie to draw her widow's pension. " I know JR Waller. he was my Brother. I know that he served in the confederate army. he went to the War with the first troops from Tennessee he Belonged to Col. Bates Regiment, 2nd Tennessee Regiment. I do not remember the letter of his company. But his Capts. name was Tom White and he served in the infantry and served from about the first of the war until the close. he had been captured and was in prison at Rock Island when the war closed and he was discharged and went home." signed SW Waller, San Saba County Texas 20 March 1916
From "Tennesseans in the Civil War Part 1" published 1964
p. 176 Thomas D White was listed as a Captain of Company F of the 2nd (Bate's) Tennesee Infantry Regiment. Men from this company were primarily from MIllersburg, in Rutherford County.
