- Since 1855, the Fabrique of the Notre-Dame de Montr?al Parish hasownedandoperated an exceptional site on Mont-Royal,the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, in the Catholic parish of Notre-Dame Basilica.
The cemetery was founded following a decision by the Faubourg St-Antoine (in thevicinity of today?s Dominion Square) to relocate its cemetery. The St-Antoine Cemetery had, by 1850, become too small to meet the needs of the growing population of Montr?al and its suburbs.
It was not until 1854, however, that the Fabrique acquired a parcel of land belonging to Dr. Pierre Beaubien. The 115-acre property, included 25 or 30 acres of trees and 80 acres of cultivated land along C?te-des-Neiges
Catholics and Protestants both established new cemeteries beyond the walls. Neither foresaw how rapidly the city would grow. Much of the new Catholic cemetery acquired in 1799 is now Dominion Square and Place du Canada. Much of the new Protestant cemetery is now the complexe Guy Favreau. Meanwhile the erection of buildings, where the old cemeteries "within the walls" had been, unearthed the remains that had been left. As the demand for real estate on St. James Street increased, many of the first buildings erected were torn down and replaced by bigger ones.
