- John Matson, Jr. was born about 1721 in Chester County, PA, to John Matson, Sr. and Margaret (name uncertain.) He married Hannah Norbury on 5 September 1741 at Middletown MH, Chester Co.
Family History Library, SLC, Film #432,020, Pt 1, Hinshaw's Encylc. Amer. Quaker Gen, Chester MM, gives the marriage date of John, Jr. and wife Hannah Norbury, place, wife's birthdate, parents, and the marriage of several of Hannah's brother's and sisters. The record states that John Matson, most likely his father, and Morris Matson [his brother] were witnesses at the wedding.
John and Hannah lived in Goshen near his brother Joseph. They had four children: Richard (b. 21 April 1745 at Easttown), Joseph (b. about 1742 at Easttown), Alice (b. about 1747 at Easttown) and Jacob (b. about 1748 at Easttown, married Jane Pierce.).
John died shortly after his last child was born. He was buried in Goshen Friends Cemetery on 3 March 1748. Hannah then married George Smedley III. They had four children, Hannah, Jeffrey, Joshua and Francis. She died in 1810. Her will was proven on 31 October 1810 at Willistown, Chester, PA. (See same film, pt 4, pg 263, for Hannah's will.)
"Davis: A Quaker Family" by Eleanor Davis, pg 891, states a John Matson of Edgemont (now Delaware Co., PA) who married in 1741, was mentioned in a removal certificate along with his daughter Alice. (Both died in March 1748.) She suggests that John Matson, Sr. "may have cared for his son John, Jr's surving children including his own twins who later died and were buried at Friends Cemetery, Merion in 1749."
Hinshaw's Encyclopedia and Quaker Records. Friends' Society, Chester, PA, Goshen MM, p. 25, birth date of first child of John and Hannah. Richard, second son, is listed in 1780 Chester Co. tax list.
