- Several Busby families were living in Jackson County, AL before 1830. Page 109 of the Jackson County 1830 census listed a Thomas Busby family with one male 40 - 50, one male 80 - 90, two females under 5 and one female 20 - 30. Another Thomas Busby family is listed with one male under 5, one male 20 - 30 and one female 15 - 20. These ages fit the profile of the Thomas Busby who married Ruhama Euphonia Base. The census also listed a John Busby family with one male 10 - 15, one male 70 - 80, two females 20 - 30 and one female 50 - 60. The Thomas Base family was listed next to the Busby families.
John Busby purchased land in Jackson County, AL on 20th September, 1831. The purchase was for 80 acres in the West half of the NW quarter, Section 13, 2 South, & East on Highway 117 near Stevenson. He again purchased land on 10th October, 1840. The purchase was for 40 acres in the NE quarter of the NE quarter of Section 14, 2 South, 6 East on Big Coon Creek. John Busby and his wife, Margaret, sold land to Charles N. Barrier on 5th May, 1834.
Thomas Busby purchased land in Jackson County, AL on 9th September, 1834. The purchase was for 40 acres in the NE quarter of the SW quarter, Section 13, 2 South, 7 East on Crow Creek, south of Highway 117 near Stevenson. Thomas also purchased land on 10th October, 1840. The purchase was for 40 acres in the NE quarter, Section 19, 2 South, 7 East on Big Coon Creek and west of County Road 55, also known as Low Gap.
In 1837, A Thomas Busby was Justice of the Peace in Stevenson, Jackson County, AL.
Thomas and Ruhama Busby were living in Jackson County, AL in 1844 at the time of the birth of their daughter, Mary J. Busby. Records indicate that Thomas and Ruhama moved their family to Warren County, TN sometime between 1844 and 1850. Ruhama was listed as head of family in the Warren County, TN 1850 census. Her children were listed with her. Ruhama and the children were back in Jackson County, AL by December, 1851.
