    Notes
    • John Foster New was buying and selling land in Surry County, NC as early as 1797.  He was listed in the 1799 evaluation of property in Stokes County, NC.  His property was located in the Bynums District.  The property was listed with a value under $100.  He owned two dwellings valued at $45 and 148 acres valued at $148.
John F. New was listed in the 1800 Stokes County, NC census.  The listing was in the Salisbury District, page 612.  The census listed two males under 10, one male 10 - 16, one male 26 - 45, three females under 10 and one female 26 - 45.
John F. New was listed in the 1810 Stokes County, NC census.  The listing was
in the Shatra District on page 131.  The census listed one male under 10, one male 16-26, one male over 45, two females under 10, one female 10-16, two females 16-26, and one female 26-45.  The census listing does not account for two sons.
John Foster New was buried in Gilboa Cemetery about two miles southwest of Cleveland, Indiana.  John and Sarah resided in Stokes County, NC until about 1812, then moved to Warren County, KY.  They lived there until about 1820, then moved to Wayne County, IN.  John apparently lived in Hancock County, IN., about 13 years until his death.
Except for George Leonard New, much of the data on the children of John Foster and Sarah (Wright) New was provided by George New, Minot, ND and by Jack Martin.
Susan Garner wrote that John and his first wife, Polly (Hall) New had a daughter named Catherine who married Thomas Martin of Stokes County, NC.
There are several conflicts in the genealogies proposed by New descendants.  These conflicts encompass dates of births, identities of marriage partners, and assignments of children to parents.  For example,  John Foster's year of birth has been reported as 1762.  There seems to be agreement that his place of birth was England.  Yet, a New family sketch in Colonial Families of America recorded John's year of birth as 1750 and noted that his widowed mother immigrated to America in 1761.  If Elizabeth      (Tattern) New did in fact bring her three children to America in 1761, John Foster would not have been born in England in 1762.
These conflicts have not been resolved in 2004.
