The story told in the immediate family was that he went off to work in the oil fields one day, he was a truck driver, and he just never returned He left a wife, Dillie Lou (Brown - she was also a second cousin), and five kids, Ruby, RD, Lois, "Buck", and the youngest LeeRoy (my husband's father) to fend for themselves.
Dillie and the kids moved to California along with William Leslie "Bill" Mulkey whom she married at some point. Many years later, John came back to visit the family in California. It didn't go well, some accusation about John trying to get frisky with a daughter-in-law, and no great reconciliation.
Leonard Dikes, a son of brother Luther Herndon's, mentioned that Uncle Johnnie came around every once in a while when he was a kid and he frequently had a new woman with him and he drank a lot. He remembered one time, their family picking up an old down-on-his-luck hitchhiker somewhere near Wickenburg, Arizona only to discover it was their Uncle Johnnie. The fellow wouldn't acknowledge who he was; he just asked to be let out of the car.
There is a news article about a prohibition liquor bust in Big Springs, Howard County, Texas which appeared in the Abilene News in 1939. The story mentions a John C Dikes who seems to match.
There is a death certificate for a J C Dikes on the LDS pilot site. The fellow born in "Rockwell," Texas died in Phoenix. Maricopa Co., Arizona in 1944. He'd been living in Tuscon, Pinal Co., Arziona previously. The age on the document doesn't match but the fellow was in the hospital for near 3 years before he died and no other concrete details are provided.
