Letha "Aletha" Elizabeth Lewis |

- I am told that Letha was named at birth Celety and changed it to Celetha, then to Letha and later to Aletha - her grave near Dublin, Texas has the name as Aletha. Also some records have her name as Letha Elizabeth, but she never used the name Elizabeth as far as is known.

Notes |
- From a letter by a granddaughter, Coreta Fae Goodwin Smith, I learned that as a young girl of 16, Letha went out riding with a guest and her older brothers. Her father, Stephen Lewis, became angry at her as he claimed she was showing a lack of decorum and was determined to send her away to girls finishing school to learn how to be a proper lady.
Young Letha rebelled and ran off with the son of her father's overseer, named Abraham Smith. Her father decreed that she "should never again darken this door" and she was never to return to the Lewis Plantation while he was alive.
She remained close to her brothers and sisters who moved to Texas sometime after the Civil War. Her mother died two years after Letha was driven away from the Lewis home, some say from a broken heart.
