Gender Female Died Y Notes - There is some debate about the identity of Joseph Cloud's wife. Harley Cloud and Jim Brewton say she is Nancy Evans born in 1804 in Tennessee, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Evans, married in 1823 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. They get their information from the Cloud Family Journal. In CFJ XIV, no 2, page 35 there is a paragraph that indicates, "Joseph F. Cloud and his wife Nancy Cloud, formerly Nancy Evans and James Newsom and his wife Sally Newsom formerly Sally Evans of the County of Maddison and state of Tennessee..."
E.B. Cloud says she is Nancy Cox, and that she migrated to Texas with Joseph in 1850. I don't know where E.B. got his information.
I now have documentation from Mary Frances Cloud Gibson who states that her grandfather was Joseph Cloud and her grandmother was Nancy Cox.
Nancy's granddaughter, Mary Frances (Cloud) Gibson, applied for money due to Cherokee tribal members on the Guion-Miller rolls in about 1907 claiming that her grandmother, Nancy (Cox) Cloud, was full-blood Cherokee. She was denied based on her brothers' applications. Nancy's brothers, Jake Cloud and George Cloud also applied, but their applications were denied. However, this is the best proof we have that there is a Cherokee connection in this Cloud line. The Guion-Miller rolls were rolls of Cherokee Indians who were awarded money and land by the U.S. government. The money was handed out only to those tribal members who could prove a direct line to a Cherokee ancestor who was enumerated on a previous roll.
