    Notes
    • "Davis: A Quaker Family" by Eleanor Davis indicates Charles was born in Britain an immigrated to the USA abt 1725. She states his surname was Davies, but his descendants often dropped the "e" and went by Davis. She also states in her book (pg 11) that the first known mention of Charles Davies was on the occasion of his marriage to Hannah Matson, daughter of John Matson of Merion. She quotes from misc. records of Radnor Monthly Meeting, 1680-1777, pg 463, that they were married at the home of Charles Read, Esqr.in the County of Philadelphia (PA) on 9 Dec 1732, by consent of HER FATHER. (Was she still a minor?) Among persons present at the wedding (listed in the right column) were John Matson, Jr., Daniel Matson (probably brothers) Mary Andrew, Jane George, Ellin Jones, Sarah William and Sarah Read. The left column listed James Jones, Enoch Lewis, Evan George, Thos Evan and others. No mention of Hannah's father or mother was made. (The date would be 1733 as the Quakers would have given it the year 1732.)  Eleanor Davis' book also quotes Cane Creek MM of 7th mo. 4th day of 1761, "...recognize Charles Davis as minister..."  "Five years later was disowned by the meeting." (Davis, pg 13)
Eleanor Davis conjectures that Hannah was the great-granddaughter of Margaret Mattson of Chester Co, wife of Nils Mattson. Margaret was tried but acquitted of the accusation of being a witch in 1654. This RESEARCHer (Elaine Matson Reschke) believed at one time that Hannah's grandfather was John Dalbo Mattson who was the son of Matts Hansson and that Nils Mattson was possibly a relative. This has been disproved as the will of John Matson (d. 1702 names children, but not a John). Peter Stebbins Craig who wrote "The 1693 Census of the Swedes On the Delaware" feels Hannah father may have descended from Wales, not Sweden.
The Chester County tax list shows Charles Davis in Newtown in 1737 and in Easttown in 1739 and 1740.Fairfax MM records reveal that on 6/25/1750 Charles, Hannah and children moved to Carver's Creek MM in N.C. and when Crane Creek MM was established in Oct 1751 they became charter members. In 1761 Charles Davis became a minister for the Friends Socienty but within 5 years was disowned by the meeting for complaining about the women's minute being mixed with untruths. When Charles and Hannah died is uncertain, but Charles cannon be located in the 1790 or 1800 census. One source says he died 5/5/1771 and buried Cane Creek MH. Hannah moved to Center MH in 1775, Guildford Co, NC where youngest dau. lived. Records were destroyed.
2/11/04 New info on birth place of Charles Davis from Kacy Davis kacyd-at-onrap113.org.  She states Charles was born in Luton Parish, Bedfordshire, England, which conincides with Eleanor Davis' theory of his birth place. Changed from Pennsylvania to above.
