Chaplin born 8/23/1826 died 1/9/1897 and his wife Frances S born 7/18/1817 and died 10/23/1893 raised Daniel for at least part of his childhood. In the 1870 census Daniel is listed as living with George as a Tanner apprentice. This bit of information I had also heard my father Everette Herman Brady mention. Further, according to notes from Donald Brady, food was so scarce (due to the Union soldiers confiscating it) that many people were practically starving. Apparently Mary Ann let George take Daniel to keep him from starving. Donald also indicates there may have been another child of Mary younger than Daniel along the same time period. I assume this child Donald referred to is James Franklin Brady. In the 1880 census for Carroll County, Virginia, I find Mary Ann Brady with a young boy named James F Brady living with the family of Early L. Williams. Mary in this census is age 40. While there is about a 5 year age discrepancy, it is likely this is the same Mary Ann Brady. I was not able to follow this to the 1890 census because it has been destroyed by fire. Daniel passed away on his birth date, April 20. At the time of his death, April 20, 1944, I do not believe the family was aware of his birth date, April 20, 1856, because the date on the tombstone is listed as the year 1859 with no day or month. While it may seem odd, his wife Valeria born November 18, 1866 also passed away on her birth date of November 18 in 1932.
