    Notes
    • Family name was uniformly spelled HARDYMAN in old Bible record of THOMAS HARDYMAN kept by SIRMANS Family. Name spelled same on deed & estate records of Screven & Bulloch County's & on state land grant records in South Carolina & Revolutionary War accounts. After Rev. moved to Georgia, he settled in Effingham County, later cut into Screven then Bulloch County's, Georgia. Bulloch County Georgia Genealogical Source Material, pg 43 0, by A. Register. Scull Creek Baptist Church was constituted Oct 24, 1804 Bulloch County, Georgia. Is now in Emanuel County, Georgia. (this county was created partly from Bulloch.) This church is now known as Hebron Church, name changed in 1818
He served as captain in Col. Powell's Regiment, South Carolina militia, in 1775-77, in the Revolutionary War; and his son, Joseph, served as ensign in the same company under his father (see p.245, Gregg's "History of the old Cheraws"). About the time of the close of the Revolution, the Hardyman family moved to Georgia and settled in Effingham County (later cut into Screven and then Bulloch counties).
Thomas Hardyman/Hardeman was in Darlington Co. SC in an area called Lake Swamp, on the East side Lynches Creek. This is between the present towns of Darlington and Lamar. In the "SC Magazine of Ancestral Research", Spring 1979, p. 78: "Darlington County Memorialized Records" are these entries: #21 John Byrd to Thomas Hardyman, Lease and release. 1781, Nov 4 & 5. 130 Acres Lake Swamp #22 Thomas Hardyman to Thomas Jones, Lease and release, Nov 4 & 5 1781, 300 Acres East side Lynches Creek.
The book "Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772" by Jean Stephenson, published by Shenandoah Pub. House Inc, Strasburg, VA c. 1971 shows that Thomas Hardyman was in the Hayes Swamp area of Darlington Co. in 1773.
In the "History of Old Cherawas" by Alexander Gregg, published by the State Co., Columbia SC c. 1867 p. 245 "The following commissions were made out, signed and dated as here entered, for officers in Col. Powell's Regiment of Militia, St. David's Parish" Ensign Joseph Hardyman and Capt Thomas Hardyman are on the list, but only Joseph is listed in index of the book. The author states his reference for this as: "House Journal, Nov 40, pp 193,194" and this list and information on Powell's regiment follows a letter from John Rutledge dated Sep. 30th, 1776, so I assume this is the year these commissions were issued.
There is also a Stub Entry to Indents in Book D, p. 153 #117, Book D. Issued the 20th Dec. 1783 to Mr. Thomas Hardyman for Three pounds, ten Shillings and Seven Pence Sterling for Beef supplied the Continental Army in the Year 1781. Account audited. Principal Pounds 3..10..7 Interest Pounds 0..4..11 This document does not give a location but it is another indication that there was a Thomas Hardyman in SC in 1783. HARDEMAN, THOMAS 1740? - 1791 Effingham (County, Georgia) THOMAS HARDEMAN was a Revolutionary Soldier and a native of Virginia. This much seems to be well authenticated. Descendants living in Wiregrass Georgia however, were denied admission into the D. A. R. in 1948 as it appeared that the THOMAS HARDEMAN who served from North Carolina and was at the Battle of Kings Mountain, moved to Tennessee and died there in the 1830's; descendants living in other states had already been admitted on his service. As no other Revolutionary service of THOMAS HARDEMAN could be adduced, there was nothing left to do but to withdraw the application. However, it is generally known that many records of service in the Revolution have been lost through the years, so that it is entirely probably there were two THOMAS HARDEMAN's in the service. THOMAS HARDEMAN was the father of five sisters who married and lived for awhile in Effingham and Bulloch counties, then moving to Wiregrass Georgia and settling in what was then Irwin County in 1822. This is referred to in the "History of Clinch County, Georgia" (by Huxford) published in 1916 (see pp. 159-160). The name of the wife of THOMAS HARDEMAN is not known. The records of Effingham County show that the estate of THOMAS HARDEMAN was appraised August 27, 1791, but unfortunately, no other record of the estate can be found, many records of that early period being lost. The appraisers were: JOHN WOOLF, JOHN LOWE and JOHN WRIGHT. Not all the children of THOMAS HARDEMAN can be learned at this late date. Descendants, long since dead, said there were seven daughters but the Compiler did not seek to learn who they all were. JOSEPH HARDEMAN of Effingham County (annexed to Bulloch County in 1796) was an adjoining land-owner to JOSIAH SIRMANS in 1798, and was probably a son of THOMAS. The known daughters were the approximate dates of their births are as follows:
      1) WINNIE HARDEMAN b: 1754, m. JOHN MOORE 2) LUCRETIA HARDEMAN b: 1766, m. JOHN TOMLINSON, SR. 3) MARY HARDEMAN b: 1768, m. JOHN JONES, called Jack Jones 4) HARTY HARDEMAN b: 1774, m. JOSIAH SIRMANS 5) MARTHA HARDEMAN b: 1776, m. DAVID JOHNSON, SR.
JOHN THOMLINSON, SR. died in Bulloch County but his widow moved to Wiregrass Georgia, as did her four sisters named above, and their husbands. Their descendants today number many thousands in Wiregrass Georgia and Florida. Record is found of two land-grants to him from the State as follows: Grant to 150 acres in Effingham County, March 12, 1786, and grant to 150 acres in Effingham County on April 3, 1786.
