"Horton Howard was a Quaker of Quakers. Your grandfather Henry Howard married Elizabeth Wilson, a Gentile, so to say. When such and event occurred in the domestic life of a Quaker, the offending grom was excommunicated unless he would publicly acknowledge in 'openmeetin' say he was sorry. This Henry Howard wold not do, still the family in this case were very friendly -- but it had a kind of a string to it. Your grandmother attended Quaker meeting, but did not becoma a proselyte; she was eteemed one of the world's people."
