- The Gilliams are descended from Count de Guillaume who was presented with a coat of arms by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings, A.D. 1066. The family name was changed to Gilliam or Gillam after they moved to England.
William, Devereux, and John Gilliam, sons of Sir Richard and his wife Dorothy (Bradley) Gilliam, came to America in 1635 aboard the "Constance" with a Royal Commission to survey the Dominion of Virginia. These three are the ancestors of the Gilliams in this country.
