- In 1784 Joseph Carter was taxed with 100 acres and buildings, 4 horses, 5 cattle, 12 sheep, and 12 acres sowed. In connection with his brother Daniel, he inherited from his father's estate, jointly, 165 acres, 2 roods and 37 perches. This property they occupied jointly until 1793, when the made a division of the land, Joseph receiving as his share two tracts aggregating 85 acres, 3 roods, and 29 perches.

Will of Joseph Carter - Media, Delaware County, PA (Will book C:187)
Be it remembered that, I, Joseph Carter, of the township of Chester in the County of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, being of sound mind and memory, sensible of my mortality and not knowing how soon I may depart this life, thave thought fit to make and hereby do make my last will and testament, in manner following, that is to say:
First, I will and direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall be paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be, after my decease.
Item, I give and devise to my son Abraham Carter and to his heirs and assigns for ever, the House and lot of land whereon I now dwell, together with the pot-house and other buildings thereon, also three acres of the Wood Land on Chichester road, being part of he residue of a tract or thirty acres or thereabouts , with the appurtenanes, he paying to his brother William One hundred dollars.
Item, I give and devise unto my son Robert Carter and to his heirs and assigns, twenty-two acres of my tract of Woodland on the Chichester Road.
Item, I give and devise unto my son William Carter one hundred dollars to be paid to him by his brother Abraham as herin before mentioned.
Item, I give and devise unto my sons Joseph and Cloud Carter my Fishing-place at the Lazaretto to hold to them my two sons Joseph and Cloud, their heirs and assigns forever part and share alike as tenants in common.
Item, I give and devise unto my son Daniel Carter and his heirs and assigns forever my saw-mill and land and on Chester Creek, Beginning at an Old Beech tree and running between Hopewell field and the Barn field to the run, thence Northward to a Cedar tree near the line of James Barnard's land, thence along the same to the place of beginning.
Item, I give and devise unto my son Edward Carter and to his heris and assigns forever, all the remainder of said tract lying between the part devised to my son Daniel and the Concord road, bounded by Chester Creek and my brother Edward's land.
Item, I give and devise unto my son Daniel Carter and John Westly Carter, and to the surviving of them and to the heirs of such survivor for and during the natural life of my daughter Margaret Gorbey, all that piece of land with the appurtenances, containing about twenty-three acres and perches lately alloted t me by my brother Daniel Carter (excepting one half of the wood land of the said described tract) also two acres of meadow land adjoining said last described piece of land and land of Nancy McMickel intrust, nevertheless that they the said trusteees or the survivor of them or the heirs of such survivor,shall after my decease make lease of the said primises so them devised in trust and receive and take the rents and profits thereof and pay over the same and as the same shall be received by them unto my daughter Margaret Gorbey for her own sole and separate use from time to time, during all the time of her natural life and her receipt during her coverture and notwithstanding her coverture (and none other receipt but hers) shall be a full and sufficient discharge for thepayment aforesaid.
Item, It is my wish and I will and direct that my said son Daniel, his heirs and assigns, tenants and occupiers of the land herein divided to him, shall have liberty to raise water from the Creek over and across the land devised by me to my son Edward, he or they repairing all injuries and damages done to the said Edward my raising and conducting said water.
Item, I give and devise to my sons Robert, William, Joseph, Daniel, Edward, and Cloud, the remaining part of the woodland on Chichester Road, beign the residue of a tract of thirty four acres or thereabouts (twenty two fo which I have devised to my son Robert and three acres to my son Daniel) to hold the them, their heirs, and assigns as tenants in common.
Item, It is my will that all my said children shall have the liberty to dig stone for their own use only, out of the quarry on the land by me devised to my son Daniel, and they shall have privilege of a road to and from said quarry over and upon the land devised by me to my son Edward.
Item, It is my will that, in case the copper mine shall be opened on the land devised by me to my son Daniel, the profits thereof shall be divided equally amongst all my children, their heirs and assigns with this exception, that Daniel shall have two shares.
Item, it is my will that if any ior either of my said Children bring account or demand against my estate for any matter of thing whatsoever, the amound of such demand or account shall be deducted fro the part and share of my Estate devised for the one who shall make such demand, and shall be divided amongst the others of my said Children. And for and concerning all the rest and remainder of my etate, real and personal, whatsoever and wheresoever not herein before devised, I give and bequeath the same unto all my children, their heirs and assigns in equal proportions, and lastly, I do nominate and appoint my sons Daniel and Robert Carter, executors to this my last Will and Testament.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this sixteenth day of July in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hunred and twenty eight.
