- Obituary:
Conward Odell "CA" Cloud, Jr., 81, of Huntsville, passed away Tuesday.
A descendant of William Cloud and the family that once owned Cloud Town, Conward Odell Cloud Jr. was born in 1934. Most knew him as C A or Papa, and some even referred to him as "The Mayor of Cloud?s Cove," due to his stubborn and strong-willed ways; And willful he may have been, he loved his wife and family very much. He was married to the love of his life, Bonnie Bell Maples Cloud for 53 years before she passed away in 2013. He passed along his knowledge by teaching many family members including Laura, Ray, and Arnold how to fish, plant gardens and trap animals such as muskrats, fox and raccoons to sell their fur. Even recently he taught Brandon how to operate his antique Farm-All tractor. C A was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served about two years in the early to mid 1950s. He was stationed in many places from Washington to Texas to North Carolina while in the service. After the military, C A held several different occupations: working for General Shale Brick Co., worked on a dredge supplying sand and gravel for Baker Sand & Gravel, constructing houses with Jim Walter Homes, commercial fishing and muscling, as well as farming local fields. While he held many jobs, commercial fishing was his main occupation where he would catch catfish the size of him by using trot lines, gill nets, hoop nets and jugging; He would take his catch and sell them at Bill Parker?s fish market. Once he even caught a snapping turtle, weighing 103 pounds that was as big as the inside of a pick-up truck bed! Fishing was not only a means of income for him, but also a hobby; he used to spend time fishing with long time friends Pete Webster and Fred "Holliman" Cloud. Almost every Friday night he would bring home several yellow cats for Bonnie to fry up for the whole family. He often shared old stories about making moonshine and running from the revenue officers and tales of the gold that was supposed to be hidden in the caves of the nearby mountains. C A is forever in our hearts and memories.
He was preceded in death by wife, Bonnie Bell Cloud, father, Conward Odell Cloud, Sr., mother, Ida Bell Cloud, brother, Shelby Ray Cloud, Sr., brother, James Edward Cloud, and sister, Linda Faye Maples.
