- James had no offspring and lived with his widowed mother until her death. He had epilepsy or something like it. On the 1850 census of Barbour county, Alabama he is found living with his parents and two of his brothers, with his mother being the HOH. In 1860 census he is listed as HOH and his mother is living with him. His brother, Thomas Franklin Herring, prepared a chart of family births, listing those of all his 12 siblings as well as those of his nieces and nephews. He shows no chldren for his brother, James Herring. (The chart is in the possession of his great-grand niece, Mary Patricia Herring Drummond.)
