- ** His middle name is often given as Jefferson, but that is in error. His middle name was Jackson. Thomas Jackson (aka Jefferson) Hooks arrived in the Lower Rio Grande valley in 1900 and the following year moved his family to Run in southeastern Hidalgo County. In May 1902 he helped to form the La Blanca Agricultural Company, which purchased 23,000 acres fronting the river two miles east and two miles west of the site of present Donna and extending north eighteen miles. He gave part of his purchase to his twenty-one-year-old daughter, Donna Hooks Fletcher, a divorc?e. She settled in the area and established the Alameda (Grove) Ranch. Fletcher stocked the ranch with Jersey cattle purchased from the Lassater Ranch in Falfurrias and ran a successful butter business.
He was involved in the development of a little town between McAllen and Weslaco and he worked very hard to make it successful. Upon the arrival of a new railroad, the townsfolk arranged a special recognition celebration for it and for the efforts of T.J. Hooks. They invited his daughter, Donna Hooks Fletcher, who was in Beaumont at the time to attend also and, upon their arrival, they were greeted by a sign at the railroad station reading "Welcome to the town of Donna". Donna Hooks Fletcher subsequently was made postmaster and lived there the rest of her life.
