- The Civil War broke out in 1861. My father was too old to enlist, butall my brothers joined the army. I was only 11 years old at the time, but I did my part. I rode the courier line on horseback from Jasper toFarrsville. The government paid me $30 in Confederate money everymonth. This was the first money I had ever earned, and outside offrequently paying $5 for a plug of tobacco, I saved my money and hadseveral hundred dollars when the war ended in 1865. All my brothersreturned, except John. He died of pneumonia while still in service inLittle Rock, Arkansas and was buried there at the age of 23.
Conditions were so bad in the South, so many of our men killed andmany crippled for life. Our currency we had saved had no value. We allset to work to overcome these obstacles.
