    Notes
    • He was born Cheim (Patrick Co.) VA on 8 Feb 1842 the day his father, Rev. Soldier Captain William Cloud, died and his father named him in honor of George Washington. His mother was Nancy (Vaughn) Cloud and he was reared and educated in VA. He was an active and ambitious youth and inherited the fighting spirit of his ancestors; so at the age of 17, when the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the 24th Virginia Inf. Co. C, Confederate States Army, operating in VA. Later he was made a member of the 26 VA Cav., in which he was commissioned First Captain. Washington Cloud was in command of a Regt. and took part in many severe and hard fought battles, having attained the rank of Colonel during that time. He was wounded in one of those engagements, but continued to fight until the close of the war serving with Stonewall Jackson. After Lee's surrender, he went to Johnson's Army, was paroled in 1865 and returned home.
Washington Cloud studied Law at Christainburg, VA where he was admitted to the bar in 1867. He practiced law in Virginia until the courts were closed during the reconstruction period, when he went to KY where he practiced. In 1869 he married Miss. Amelia Weddington of KY, and in May of that year they journeyed to Harrisonville, Cass Co., MO. They remained there until August when they came to southwest MO and settled in Pierce City, Lawrence Co. MO in April 1870. He continued to practice law, and it was here that he and Amelia raised their family of six children.
Washington Cloud became a prominent citizen of the community. In 1871-1872 he was owner, along with a Mr. Kelly, of the Lawrence Co. Democrat. In June 1884, Washington Cloud purchased the Pierce City Record, changing its name to The Pierce City Democrat, selling in 1887.
In 1878 he ran unsuccessfully for County Prosecutor as a Democrat. In 1885 he was elected Mayor, an office he served twice more, and in 1879-1880 he was elected to the Board of Education. In addition, he was a member of the A.O.U.W. and he owned a 40 acre farm in Lawrence Co., along with other land in Barry and Newton counties, all in southwest MO.
Washington died in the State Hospital in Nevada, MO, 1 Sep 1929, after a long illness. His wife preceded him in death in 1910. Both are laid to rest in the Pierce City Cemetery. The family were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church - South. Washington Cloud was declared insane by the Court at the request of his children who then divided his money. He died in the State Hospital.
From "Early Families of Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky" by William C. Kozee. - He was editor of Pierce City Democrat.
