He and his sister were raised by their step-mother Elizabeth. He had 2 half brothers, Harve and Bill. The family moved to Iowa, Missouri and then to Illinois. When George was in his early teens, his father's second marriage ended in divorce and George struck out on his own working hard to continue his education.
George's obituary appeared in the Trenton Register (NE) on Sept. 16, 1932 on page 1. It mentions that George was survived by his wife, 6 children, 45 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. He was converted and united with the Mennonite Church almost half a century ago.

Funeral services were held here Thursday afternoon for George Washington Seybold, who died at his home in Trenton, Nebr., Tuesday, Sept. 13. Mr. Seybold was born in Orange county, Ind., Sept. 17, 1851, making him 80 years, 11 months and 26 days of age. he moved with his parents to Illinois as a small boy and lived there until coming to Franklin county, Nebraska in the fall of 1878. He homesteaded a farm southwest of the present site of Hildreth, when the country was raw prairie, dotted at long intervals by small sod houses, with Kearney as the nearest trading point. He was married in Illinois to Miss Luisa Turner Sept. 25, 1870, and to this union were born ten children. Four died in infancy, leaving four sons and two daughters. Mrs. Seybold died Feb. 22, 1917, and about that time Mr. Seybold sold his farm home and went to Trenton for an extended visit. Here he met and married Mrs. Hattie Boyd, the marriage taking place Feb. 28, 1918, and the couple lived on a farm near Trenton seven years, when Mrs. Seybold died Nov. 23, 1925. Sept. 23, 1926, he was married to Mary Thomas of Beatrice, who survives him. He was converted in early life and was a member of the Mennonite church for years, later affiliating with the Methodist church. He bore his long illness with christian fortitude and was ready for his Master's call. The services here were in in charge of Rev. John Lewein and the church was filled. The pallbearers were sons of old friends. Burial was made in the Hildreth cemetery where 50 years ago his children were laid to rest, among the first to be placed in this cemetery. There also the mother rests. All of his children present at the funeral: Samuel and wife of Higler; Jasper and wife, Trenton; Casper, Kiota, Colo.; William and wife of Wilcox; Mr. and Mrs. Norman Skiles of Wilsonville and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Maret of Moorefield.
