Arthur Herbert Degroat, Sr.
Arthur Herbert Degroat, Sr. , age 88, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Sunday, April 10, 2005. He was born April 15, 1916 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a resident of Alexandria for many years, where he owned and operated Degroat Hardware Store. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees with Construction Battalion 56 during the Pacific Campaign of WWII. He was a member of the Alexandria First Church of the Nazarene. He had lived with his son and daughter in Panama City for the last three years where he attended the Panama City First Church of the Nazarene and was affectionately known by all as "Papa Degroat". Mr. Degroat was a loving husband and father. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Stieber Degroat; his second wife, Eva Miller Degroat; grandson, Jonathan Degroat; brothers, Carl Degroat and Charles Degroat, Jr.; and sisters, Edith Degroat Williams and Violet Degroat Pace. Survivors include his son, Arthur Degroat, Jr. and wife Gloria of Panama City, Fla.; grandson, Jeremy Degroat of Pittsburgh, Pa.; brother, Ernest Degroat of Alexandria; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Donald and Shirley Miller Bowser of Warren, Pa., and Webb and Betty Miller Perryman. Services will be at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2005 with burial to follow at the cemetery. The Rev. Ron G. Perry will officiate. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. Thursday until time of services at the funeral home.
