Norma Lee Houser Bugg
Springfield - A loving mother, a beautiful hostess and a generous friend are how many would describe "Mama Bugg". Norma Lee (Houser) Bugg was born on July 10, 1926, in Clever, MO to Guineth (Cloud) Houser and Ralph Houser. She graduated from Clever High School and then moved to Springfield and went to work for City Utilities. It was there she met the love of her life, James Bruce Bugg, Sr. After a brief courtship, during which Jim gave her the nickname "Swivel Hips", they married on November 23, 1946. A year later to the day, their first child, Diana Lynne Bugg, was born. Norma was involved in Jim's budding career in the casket business and frequently, with Diana at her side, travelled with him. Happily, seven years later, James Bruce Bugg, Jr. was born and the family became known as the "Four Buggs".
Norma and Jim were charter members of National Avenue Christian Church in Springfield, where she taught Sunday school. As part of her civic focus, she supported her daughter's Camp Fire Girls activities and was a Den Mother for her son's CUB Scout Troup.
Norma was an avid gardener and superb flower arranger. She often entered floral arranging contests, where her specialty was in Japanese floral design. She was frequently a judge herself. She loved the Springfield Art Museum where she took classes and introduced her daughter to the world of art, plus was an early member of Springfield Missouri Museum Associates (SMMA).
When Diana and Bruce were small, the Four Buggs traveled throughout the United States by car. After Jim retired, worldwide travel took them to many continents and it became their passion. The snowbirds loved their winter trips to Mexico and Hawaii.
One of Norma's greatest joys was in giving to others and birthdays were her specialty. You were guaranteed to receive "several" cakes to celebrate your special day. She also delighted in playing a game of "hot and cold" with children and grandchildren.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 72 years, James Bruce Bugg, Sr.; her parents; her sister, Mary Lou (Houser) Hawkins; Aunt, Elva Cloud Likins; and Grandmother, Sarah Perlina Jane Cloud.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana Lynne Bugg and husband James Bertlesman; son, James Bruce Bugg, Jr. and wife Alethea; grandchildren, James Bruce Bugg III and Thomas Andrew Bugg; nieces, Susie Turner and her husband David; Ann Swink, Pam Boyd, and nephew, James Terry White.
A visitation will be held at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 E Seminole, on Monday, November 19, 2018 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at National Avenue Christian Church at 1515 S National, on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 10:00 am, under the care Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. A private inurnment will be held a later date at Springfield National Cemetery.
