WILLIAM LINDSAY "BILL" CLOUD, born March 6, 1921, died on February 5, 2016.
He was born in Clark County, Arkansas at his great-grandfather's log cabin to William Lindsay Cloud, Sr. and Nellie Grace Bobo-Cloud.
He is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Lillian "Lee" Phyllis Justus Cloud, his sister, Lynnelle Grace Emmons, and his brother, Robert Edward Cloud.
He met his wife, Lee, during WWII while stationed in Wisconsin. They wrote to one another during the war and married on June 11, 1949. They were devoted to one another until Lee's death on July 23, 2010.
He started his education in a two room school house at the Christian Campground Public School. During his early career, Bill taught school and was then hired as principal and later worked as an analytical chemist. During WWII, Bill graduated from Engineer Officer Candidate School. He served in the US Army, Combat Engineers, 1943-1947. In 1948, Bill graduated from Henderson State Teachers College with a BA in Chemistry & Mathematics. In 1952, he graduated from Washington University School of Dental Medicine and established his dental practice in Little Rock.
Bill and Lee have three children, Teresa Lee Cloud Hughes, J.D., married to Circuit Judge Thomas M. Hughes III, W. Lindsay Cloud III, DMD, married to Robin Hodges Cloud, and John Justus Cloud, DDS, married to Valerie Oakley Cloud. He has three granddaughters, Gwyneth Hughes, M.D., (Railene), Lauren Cloud Wiegel (Micah), Katherine Cloud and her fianc?, Drew Tappan and three great-grandchildren, Annaleigh, Nathan and Evie.
To his great pride, in 1983 his sons joined him in dental practice forming Cloud, Cloud & Cloud.
In addition to his dedication to his family and dental practice, Bill gave generously of his time to public service. He was active in his church, St. James Methodist Church, serving in many roles and positions. He was a Life Member of the American Dental Association and the Arkansas State Dental Association. He was a founding member and first President of the Pulaski County Dental Society; a founding member and past president of the Arkansas Chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry; past president of the Academy of Children's Dentistry, Arkansas Chapter; and, past president of the Arkansas Chapter of the American College of Dentistry. He was a founding member of the Cleft Palate Team at Arkansas Children's Hospital. Bill was the founder and a past president of the first Washington University Century Club. He was the president of the Washington University Dental Alumni Board of Directors in 1974 and was the Dental Alumni Association Alumnus of the Year in 1969. He served on the Washington University Alumni Board of Governors in 1974. Bill was a member of the Dean's Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee, University of Tennessee School of Dentistry. He placed his first dental implant in 2002 at the age of 81 years and retired from the practice of dentistry at the age of 86.
Bill was the acting director of the State Department of Health in 1962 and President of the State Board of Health in 1978. He was a member of the Governor's Joint Council of Health Care of the Aged, 1960-1962, the Governor's Committee on Comprehensive Health Planning 1971-1973 and the Governor's Committee to Evaluate the State Department of Health 1981. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Economic Opportunity Agency of Pulaski County and served as president in 1969. He was co-founder and a member of the advisory board for the Little Rock Public School Dental Assistant Training Program 1954-1974. He taught Sunday School, served as Scout Master for Troop 12 of the Boy Scouts and served as president of the Franklin Elementary School Dad's Club.
He is remembered by his family and friends for his genuine interest in people, his love of gardening (particularly his flowers and tomatoes), making German Christmas bread with Lee for over 50 friends each Christmas, and his passion for bird watching. His family will be forever grateful for the abiding friendship and care given by Stevens Yarberry as Bill dealt with the devastating effects of Alzheimer's in his final years.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, 11:00 a.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, 321 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, Arkansas with Rev. Greg Schick officiating.
Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander
