    Notes
    • He was a deputy for the husband of his second cousin, Tymandra (SPICER) CALLAHAN, Edward "Ned" CALLAHAN and participated in the bloody feuds and killings in Breathitt county of the early 20th century.  In 1903 he and Tom WHITE murdered J.B. MARCUM as he stood in the doorway of the Breathitt county courthouse, while Judge HARGIS and Sheriff CALLAHAN calmly sat in their rocking chairs and watched from across the street.  It was reported that MARCUM's body lay in the doorway for up to an hour because his friends were afraid of the sheriff and judge and their associates.
Curtis JETT and Tom WHITE were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of MARCUM.

PICKED MEN ARE STANDING GUARD OVER THE JACKSON JAIL.
Curt Jett and Tom White Now Confined in the Bastille Under Military Control.
      (Advocate Telegram.)
Jackson, Ky. - The cases of Curtis Jett and Tom White, indicted for the murder of J. B. Marcum, were called at the opening of court today by Judge Redwine and passed until June 1.
Jackson, Ky. - Picked men from the militia companies, commanded by Colonel Roger Williams of Lexington, with loaded Winchesters are guarding the Breathitt county jail. A Gatling gun so situated that it can sweep every approach to the public square is also a grim reminder of the power of the state. These precautions are now necessary by reason of the fact that Curt Jett and Tom White who were indicted by the grand jury for the recent murder of Attorney Marcum are confined in the county bastile.
The arrest of White at his little cabin far back in the very heart of the mountains yesterday and the transfer of Jett to this city from the Winchester jail were unaccompanied by scenes of disorder or violence as was anticipated in many quarters. The presence of the soldiers in large numbers may have had a salutary effect. However, the incidents that attended the arrest of White are sufficiently strenuous to be diverting.
Judge Redwine has issued an order placing the jail under military control and Jailer SPENCER turned over the keys to Colonel Williams.
Jett and White were not allowed to converse with one another, and occupy separate cells. White's attorney was denied the privilege of talking with Jett. The temporary removal of the jailer was simply to give the troops custody of those for whose safety the militia is responsible.
