    • Richard I, King of England, aka Richard Plantagenet, Count of Poitou Richard was made prisoner in Germany after the disastrous 2nd crusade in 1192, and brought before a court and accused of:      Making and alliance with Tancred of Sicily; of turning the arms of the crusade against the Christian King of Cyprus; of affronting the Duke of Austria before the battle of Acre; of obstructing the progress of the croises by his quarrels with Louis King of France; of assassinating the Marquis Conrad Prince of Tyre; and of concluding a truce with Saladin; and leaving Jerusalem in the hand of Saladin the Saracen emperor.
His mother, Eleanor of Acquitane, learns of his imprisonment, and the German court, following public outcry at his innocence, and pressure from the Pope, Henry of Germany is compelled to the consent of Richard's release, but insists that a heavy fine be paid. Eleanor imposed a tax in England and Normandy to ransom her son's freedom. "The churches and monasteries melted down their gold plate; the bishops, abbots, and nobles contributed a portion of their rents; the inferior clergy pay a tenth of their tithes; and Eleanor took this treasure to Germany and brought back her son to England. ca. 1195
