- From the houses of Castile and Plantagenet, she was 2nd wife of Alfonso IX (VIII) of Leon, whom she married in 1197. Marriage was arranged to stop the wars between England and Spain. The marriage was annulled by Pope Innocent III on the grounds of her kinship with her husband. She reigned as Queen of Castile and Leon for a few months after the death of her father, Alfonso VIII in 1214, and after her brother, Henry I who died in 1217. Berengaria (Berenguela) then proclaimed her son, Ferdinand III King of Castile in 1217.
