    • Siward, the Dane, aka Siward the Great, and Siward, Earl of Northumberland, was immortalized by Shakspeare as the conqueror of Macbeth, and who placed his son-in-law, Malcom of Scotland, on the throne.
          When Siward was about to die, he arose from his bed, and arrayed himself in his richest and best armor, saying, "It was a shame for a warrior to die in his bed."  He left, as his heir, his son Waltheof.
