    Notes
    • Henry II of England (aka Henry "Curt Mantle" for the short cloak he wore) Henry II became King of England at age twenty-one. He also inherited Normandy from his Mother; and became the lord over Anjou and Maine from his brother, Geoffrey.  He then inherited Brittany from his brother. Later acquired Touraine; and  by marriage the control of Aquitaine, the western portion of France from the Loire River to the Pyrenees Mountains.  In 1171 he went to Ireland, and declared sovereign over that island by the Pope Aenobarbus.  In 1173 he acquired the duchy of Toulouse, thus controlling most of France and all of England. Said to be short (squat) of medium height, with red hair, freckles, and grey eyes. He, like his grandfather, had many mistresses, including the "Fair Rosamund" and Princess Alice of France, she was later betrothed to his son, Richard. Henry II's reign was a long and progressive one, bringing many reforms to English way of life. He quarreled with Thomas a Becket, who was murdered by the King's Barons. King Henry II then went on the first crusade to atone for the murder of his friend. He reigned for 35 years. Died in July 1189.  Succeeded by his son, Richard I, known as the Lionheart.
