Christian Pretz, former Allentonian who later became vice president of Studebaker Corp. in South Bend, Ind., died Saturday at his home, 3020 Buckingham Drive, South Bend. He and his brother, Reuben Pretz, 234 S. 17th St., Allentown , were planning to take an extended trip to Florida. Three weeks ago as plans were completed, Christian Pretz became ill. He was retired eight years ago as vice president of Studebaker. Shortly after his retirement, he was named vice president of Durham Mfg. Co. at Fort Wayne, Ind. He retired from the latter position four years ago. Pretz went to South Bend 37 years ago after being vice president and factory manager of Maxwell-Briscoe Co., motorcar builders, in Tarrytown, N.Y. He had gone to Tarrytown with J.D. Maxwell from Detroit where he was connected with the Oldsmobile automobile organization. Prior to his automobile experience, Pretz was in the mining machine business at Cripple Creek and Denver, Colo. His early training was in locomotive shops of the Pennsylvania railroad. His wife, the former Grace E. Hersh, of Allentown, died two years ago. Surviving are the following children: Philip, assistant engineer for Lincoln division of Ford Corp., in Detroit; Richard, professor at Georgia Tech, Atlanta; four grandchildren; and the following brothers and sisters, Reuben Pretz, Mrs. I.J. Weida and Mrs. Charles Dickenshied, all of Allentown.
