Arthur J. Papke, 83, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 22 , 2004, at home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a family prayer service at 1:45 . The Rev. Martin Schmidt will officiate.
Burial will be in the Westlawn Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post 53.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Mr. Papke was born May 6, 1921, at Omaha to Arthur and Thelma (Tingley) Papke. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Wilma; a son and daughter-in-law, Harlen and Vicki Papke of Grand Island; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Thomas Wehling of Omaha, Cindy and Allen Tonniges of Doniphan. Also surviving are nine grand children and five great-grandchildren.
As a young child, he moved with his family to Petersburg, w here he was raised. Arthur served with the 242nd Field Artillery Battalion and the 12th Armored Division during WWII and saw action in Germany. After his discharge in November of 1946 he came to Grand Island. He was united in marriage to Wilma Scheer on Jan. 12, 1947, at Worms. He learned refrigeration repair at Schuffs Appliance Center in Grand Island and in 1955 started his own business. Ill health forced him to retire in 1985. Art liked to fish, hunt, garden and play cards. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post 53 of Grand Island and the Platt Duetsche. His parents preceded him in death. Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran School Heating Fund or St. Francis Hospice.
