SFC Jimmie F. Newcomb
Services for Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Jimmie Elonzo Newcomb Sr., 69, of Palestine, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Barry Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery with full military honors.
SFC Newcomb died Saturday at his residence.
He was born Sept. 10, 1936, in Hempstead to Walter Mathis and Opal Hill Newcomb.
SFC Newcomb had lived in Palestine for 20 years and was a member of Evangelistic Temple. He retired with the U.S. Army after 24 years of service having served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. His numerous awards include the bronze star medal with four oak leaf clusters, and the air medal with one oak leaf cluster. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 63 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
SFC Newcomb is survived by his wife, Sheila Newcomb of Palestine; sons, Jimmie Newcomb Jr. of Palestine, Johnnie Newcomb of Houston, Maurice Newcomb of Huffman, Dean Murdock of Fort Stewart, Ga. and Oscar Murdock of Montalba; daughters, Dawn Russell of New Jersey, Rene Gulihur of Sugar Land and Elaine Wallace of Palestine; brothers, Johnny Newcomb of Houston and Robert Newcomb of Sherman; sister, Barbara Rice of Porter; 18 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be nephews Donnie Newcomb, Randy Newcomb, Jerry Newcomb, David Newcomb, Craig Newcomb and Dale Newcomb.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home, Palestine.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
