Arthur Bumstead, Former County Treasurer, Dead
Arthur I. Bumstead, 74, Saratoga County treasurer for 18 years until his retirement in 1950, and prominently identified in civic, church and Masonic activities, died this morning in the Saratoga Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Bumstead, born in the Town of Greenfield, obtained a commercial education in Albany Business College. On Feb. 20, 1911, he took a clerical position on the county treasurer's office under the late John K. Walbridge, by whom he was employed until Walbridge retired Dec. 31, 1918.
The office of deputy county treasurer was created when the late Will W. Blackmer took over the office Jan. 1, 1919, Bumstead being appointed as the first deputy.
He resigned at the close of 1927 and two months later became assistant to McQueen Fritcher, treasurer of Montgomery County, remaining there until Jan. 1, 1933 when he took over the office of Saratoga County treasurer, to which he had been elected in November, succeeding Amos B. Jaquith of Schuylerville.
Mr. Bumstead was an active member of the First Baptist Church and had served as chairman of the Board of Deacons as well as in other offices.
He was a member of St. John's Lodge, F. and A.M., and of St. John's Chapter, R.A.M., Greenfield Center, serving at one time as high priest of the chapter. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite Lodge in Schenectady.
Surviving are his wife, Emily; a daughter, Mrs. William F. Dobberstein of Elmira; two sons, John C. of Lakewood, Ohio, and Roger C. of Minneapolis; a brother Raymond Bumstead of Scotia and two granddaughters.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Kark and Tunison Funeral Home. The Rev. Lewis M. Brehaut, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Greeridge Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
