- She worked as a linotype operator at the Albany News, which her father owned, in Albany, Texas and moved in 1968 to Denton, Texas where she attended Texas Women's University and later North Texas State University, both in Denton.
Her father couldn't find a publisher for his book "The Legend of Old Stone Ranch" and decided to publish it himself. John Worth Cloud and his wife Josie set the type and Maxine ran the press. (From story in the Denton Record-Chronicle, Denton, Texas, Wednesday, June 12, 1968, p. 1.)
