Buried circa 31 Oct 1913 Whitebead Cemetery, Pauls Valley, Garvin county, Oklahoma, USA Notes - Came to Oklahoma on trail drive from Texas. Met wife around Paul's valley. For some reason, he went to an area near the Kiamichi mountains and changed his name to Black.
Lura Black wrote (JAN 18 2001) "... John Cloud changed his name to John Black by at least 1882. In 1882 he was living in a place referred to as White Bead Hill .... might be the area which is now just referred to as White Bead. Mary Lou sent me copies of some Bills of Sale for cattle dated 1882 and 1887. In both, he is referred to as John Black." But, in 1910 census, he is in Oregon using the Cloud surname.
The family of his first cousin once removed, William Lafayette "Bill" Cloud, were told that Bill Cloud had a cousin named Jim who killed a man and that Bill gave him three dollars and told him to leave. Jim went to the Kiamichi mountains of I.T. and changed his name to Black. Bill's great grandson, Tom Cloud, recorded this story several times from his aunts and uncles, grandchildren of Bill Cloud, but he had no idea who Jim was nor if the story is true until he visited with "Jim's" descendant, Mary Lou Freeman. It is interesting that the name "Cloud" can be written over the name "Black", obliterating it, and that is exactly what was done in the family Bibles and old family records of the descendants of J.M. "Jim" Cloud/Black.
