Marie was baptised by her Uncle Henry Cloud on the same day she was born.
Marie was born too late to receive an allotment of her own from the Cherokee Nation. She left the Nation during the dust bowl in the 1930s with Clarence to find work and feed their family. Jo remembers taking care of James and Ron when Marie and Clarence were working the cotton fields in New Mexico to feed their family.
Eventually, the Avery family settled in Hutchinson, Kansas, where they raised their family. Marie lived in or around Hutchinson, Kansas the remainder of her life, except for the last five years, when she moved to Pratt, Kansas to be near Jo, her daughter, who took care of her until her death.
In each of her children, Marie instilled a pride of being Cherokee. She was a marvelous cook. She was known for her baked bread, Christmas bread, pies with a fantastic crust, and many other dishes. The dish all her children remember eating the most, growing up, was ham and beans.
