- Obituary:
Sister Mattie E Finley, nee Massie, was born in Rusk County, Texas Feb 5th, 1849; graduated with first honors at Marshall Masonic Institute in 1870; professed religion and joined the M E Church South in her 20th year. She was married Dec 19, 1871 to Olin Anthony Finley. Ceremony was performed by Rev. Richard Lane, uncle of the groom. Moved with her husband from Rusk to Ellis Co, Texas in 1879 and died March 6th, 1886.
She was attractive in person and was endowed with an unusually fine mind. but few ladies in a lifetime have done more for suffering humanity, or more for the intellectual, moral and religious training than Sister Mattie.
She relied on an abiding faith in the promises of God in the Bible.
In conversation and in prayer, she spoke and felt that Thou God sent me. We know she is in a happy Heaven, for our Savior has said, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God". Weep not surviving husband, she has crossed over the river and is beckoning you on; be personally prepared and train up your darling little boy to meet her again by and by in that blissful abode where sickness and parting will be known no more.
